Portage Lake Water Quality Report: What You Need to Know

The Portage Lake Association recently released its annual water quality monitoring results, and the overall news is encouraging — but there are areas that need continued attention.

Key Findings

Water clarity in Portage Lake has remained stable over the past three years, with Secchi disk readings averaging 8-10 feet during summer months. Phosphorus levels are within acceptable ranges but trending slightly upward in certain coves, particularly near areas with older septic systems.

Why It Matters

Water quality directly affects property values, recreation, and the ecosystem. A healthy lake supports better fishing, cleaner swimming, and higher home values. The Portage Lake Association estimates that every 1-foot improvement in water clarity correlates with approximately a 1-2% increase in waterfront property values.

What You Can Do

  • Maintain your septic system — pump every 3-5 years and have it inspected regularly
  • Use phosphorus-free fertilizers — or better yet, maintain a natural shoreline buffer
  • Don't feed the geese — goose waste is a significant source of lake nutrients
  • Report any unusual conditions — algae blooms, discolored water, or fish kills
  • Get Involved

The Portage Lake Association welcomes new members and volunteers. Membership dues fund the water quality monitoring program. Visit their website or attend the Spring Meeting on April 26th to learn more.

Protecting our lakes is a community effort. For more information on lakefront best practices, check with the Livingston County Drain Commission or the Michigan DEQ.
