Your Guide to Summer on the Portage Chain of Lakes

Summer on the Portage Chain of Lakes is something special. Whether you're a lifelong resident or new to the community, this guide covers everything you need for a perfect season on the water.

Boating Essentials

Speed limits: Most lakes in the chain have a slow-no-wake zone within 100 feet of shore. Portage Lake allows full speed in the main body during daylight hours. Always check posted signs at launches.

Launch sites: The main DNR launch on McGregor Road provides access to Portage Lake and the full chain. Additional access points are available at Base Lake and Zukey Lake.

Registration: All motorized watercraft must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State. Display your registration sticker on the port (left) side of the bow.

Best Fishing Spots

The chain offers excellent fishing year-round. In summer, target largemouth bass along the weed edges of Portage Lake's north shore. Zukey Lake produces reliable walleye in the deeper channels. Strawberry Lake is your best bet for muskie — troll large swimbaits along the drop-offs.
